“The Levulan Photodynamic (PDT) Blue Light Therapy treatment for Skin Cancer was the most painful experience I have ever had to go through”.
Today I am going to share with you my personal experience with Skin Cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma, and the LEVULAN Photodynamic Blue Light Therapy treatment I had done on my face in order to try and help kill my bad mutated skin cells.
What is Blue Light Therapy? Let me start by explaining what this treatment is, and who it is for.
Levulan is a prescription cream that when paired with a blue light machine, helps to remove (kill) mutated skin cancer cells. This cream is only allowed to be used in a Dermatologist office, and not for home use.
The basic idea of this cream is that when applied to the face (letting it sit for up to 1 hour on your face) the cream will seep deep into your skin layers, and attach to the mutated skin cells. Then when the blue light is turned on, the cream is supposed to turn into oxygen, bursting the mutated cells within the skin, essentially killing them and stopping them from multiplying.
I thought that my experience with this treatment would be good to document, so that others who need this treatment, can be prepared before their treatment. You can watch my experience in my YouTube video below.
“No one on Youtube warned me that this treatment was going to be extremely painful”.
Here’s what you need to know:
If you follow me and my skincare brand then you might already know my story. If you are new to me, you can read my personal story HERE, and see how my skincare line “SunLux Skincare” came to be. (hint: my experience with Basal Cell Carcinoma was at the heart of my intention to create my own skincare line).
“Knowledge is power, and had I had this information, I could have prepared mentally for what was about to happen”.
Please know that I did not make this video or write this blog post to scare you, I am writing this because I wish I had been able to mentally prepare myself for my treatment. No one said, hey, just so you know this might hurt a little, or a lot! No one said, you might develop a big infection on your face because we are essentially burning off the top layer of skin on your face, making you highly vulnerable to bacteria and infection.
No one said any of this!
Here is the POSITIVE side of the LEVULAN Blue Light Therapy treatment.
The day I left from having my first treatment I was informed that I needed 2-3 more treatments of this LEVULAN therapy. Sadly, as of the day I am writing this it has been 5 years and I have not gone back for more treatments. I do plan to, I’m just not sure when. The good news is the next time I will be able to mentally prepare myself for this treatment and feel more in control of staying in front of my Skin Cancer Basal Cell Carcinoma.

The Good & Bad of Pico Laser Treatment
The first time I ever heard of the Pico Laser, was from my Dermatologist. I asked her if it was possible to remove these dark spots on my lower cheek that I have had for so many years. I actually don’t remember not having them. I told her I had never heard of it, and she shared with me how wonderful this laser is.
Don’t worry, I’ll get to the downside of this laser, later in this post.
She explained the Top 3 Benefits of the Pico Laser, and how it is very different from other lasers because;
Pico Laser is known in the aesthetics world for helping to remove sun spots, sun damage and even freckles.
But wait, the best part about this laser is that it does not hurt! Now, if you follow me and my YouTube channel, you know that I have done a handful of laser treatments, and most of them are so painful that I have to prepare myself mentally before going in for the treatment. I had no idea the Pico Laser was not going to hurt until I had it done. What a bonus!
If you want to see my experience with the Pico Laser and my unbelievable results, then here is the YouTube video below where you can watch my laser treatment along with the healing process and my before & after pictures. It truly has been the best treatment for removing my sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and sun damaged areas. I will definitely be doing this treatment again.
Pico Laser Treatment has been the best treatment I have ever done to remove my Sun Spots!
Now, to be honest, I need to also share the downside of this treatment. The good news is that I only have 2 things that are a negative in my opinion, but both wouldn’t stop me from having this treatment done again.
Downside #1: The spots that are treated get very dark for about 14 days before they shed off and reveal the fresh skin underneath. Knowing that, you really want to time your treatment when you know you have some downtime, and won’t feel embarrassed if people see these super dark spots on your face.
Downside #2: The cost for this treatment was very expensive. I paid $1,000 (USD) for these few spots to be treated. That is a lot of money. For that much money I should have been able to get my entire face and chest done. Ok, maybe that’s a bit much. My point is it’s expensive, but so worth it.
If you have struggled to find something that will actually remove those sun spots, hyperpigmentation, or even freckles then I would highly recommend you give this treatment a try.
I hope you find my experience helpful, and it helps you decide if this treatment is for you.

Whether you grew up in a sunny part of the world, or you grew up only really seeing the sun on summer vacations, sun damage has probably hit your skin in one way or another. As the years pass, evidence of sun damage to your skin slowly begins to reveal itself. If you’re anything like me, you are constantly asking yourself “how can I repair this sun damage?” and trying new ways to remedy it.
Today I am going to share with you my TOP 5 ways to repair and reverse sun damaged skin, and you can do any of these tips at any age. Let’s get started!
“5 Steps To Repair Sun Damaged Skin”
In step 1, I am going to come right out of the gate and give you my favorite and best tip out of all 5 tips I am giving you today. Why, you ask? Because if you don’t ready any further I want to make sure you know that there is one thing I have tried, and have had the best results of any of the things I have tried so far.
Have you ever heard of “Pico Laser?” The Pico Laser, is a non-invasive laser that uses ultra-short wavelengths that are extremely precise, and do not use heat. This Laser is known in the aesthetics world for helping to remove sun spots, sun damage and even freckles.
My favorite part about this laser is that it does not hurt!
Currently, if you are not wearing a sunscreen daily, you are definitely skipping a major step in your morning routine. Not only does sunscreen help to reduce the damage of UV rays to your skin, but it also helps to drastically reduce your risk of skin cancer. I know this personally having had 4 spots of Basal Cell Carcinoma taken from my head, chest and both shoulders. And if you still don’t believe me, here is what the Skin Cancer Foundation says about sunscreen.
*“Regular daily use of SPF 15 sunscreen can reduce your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) by about 40 percent, and lower your melanoma risk by 50 percent.”
My daily sunscreen comes from my own skincare line, SunLux Skincare. I use the Lux Sunscreen SPF 25 + Daily Moisturuzer in one. Not only is my sunscreen one of my favorites, but I have designed my entire line around helping others repair their skin from sun damage.
You can read more of my story HERE, and don’t forget to wear sunscreen, your skin will thank you for it!
Another tip is to use products that have ingredients that are meant to help with sun spots, and sun damaged skin. You can do this by reading the ingredients list on products, or researching about them on the internet. But don’t worry, I have done the hard work for you.
My favorite product is one that I personally formulated myself, for the purpose of repairing the UV damage done to my skin. It has won 2 “Beauty Shortlist Awards” and is a customer favorite. It’s my UV Repair Oil with non-photosensitive St. John’s Wort in it. It’s jam packed with skin loving ingredients that really help to repair and brighten the skin.
Star Ingredients:
I know you have probably heard this a million times, but it really needs to be said. When it comes to an overall healthier body, water is a must. It will help with your skin, hair, nails and even your mood.
I find that on the days that I stay hydrated, I feel like I have accomplished something really good for my body. Instead of making it a daily hassle, I make it a fun challenge. I do this by using a water bottle that has marks on it that show me how much water I should drink, and by what time of the day. It’s a fun way to track my daily water intake, and again feel accomplished at the end of my day when I have emptied the bottle.
Here is the bottle, you can click the picture to get it off Amazon.
My last tip for repairing sun damaged skin at any age is to track your skin yearly. What does this mean? It means that you have a skin check-up annually by a Dermatologist and if you find any moles, or odd spots on your body, you write them down in a Skin Diary, and watch them year after year. This is such an important step in caring for your skin, so that you can catch any types of skin cancers at an early stage.
I have created a FREE Skin Diary form that you can download from the Blog post below and start keeping track of your skin today. Just click on the Skin Diary picture below.
I hope you find all 5 of my tips helpful, and any one of them you can start today!

It’s easy right, just start with minimizing one area of your life, um NO!. For today’s topic, we are going to talk about what it looks like to cut back on the number of items you have in your skincare routine, and then I will give you a Minimalist Skincare routine for both Am & PM.
First I must address one thing!
What “Minimalism” means to one person, is NOT the same for another!
If you think that by watching videos of people who own less than 50 items, means they are the only ones who get to call themselves minimalists, you are wrong. A minimalist is someone who is intentional about cutting back on the amount of things they own, but not giving up the things they love.
I remember watching a Marie Kondo talk once, and she was taking questions. The person asked her “Is there a limit to how many pens I can have in my office?” Marie said, “No. If you love having blue pens' in your office and they spark joy and happiness. Then you can have 100 blue pens”. It’s about keeping what we love or brings us joy, by letting go of the useless items that cause us stress or clutter. With that said let’s talk about skincare.
“Skincare Minimalist, Probably Never”
I hate to admit it, this is probably one area of my life that I won’t be looking to minimize. I absolutely love my skincare routine, and I find it so comforting, and soothing. It’s my own personal form of self care. So if you are like me, keep do’in what you're do’in!
On the flip side of that coin, since I am a cosmetic skincare formulator, and I sell my own skincare line of products (SunLux Skincare), I continually have customers that want to know. “What is the minimum number of products I can use”, they say. These are some of my favorite customers, because they know exactly what they want, the bare minimum!
Here is my answer: “You can get away with 2-3 products in total, everyday for a good skincare routine. But hear me when I say this, you will most likely NOT be Anti-aging or Exfoliating your skin. You are leaving out products that are usually meant for those specific purposes, and if we are limiting the number of products, those two things will most likely not happen”. Their response is usually, “Okay that’s fine, or wait, tell me what I need to use to get one of those things”.
“The Trick To Cutting Back on The Number
of Skincare Products You Use Daily”
Look for products that are “Multi-functional”! Multi-functional products are amazing products to invest in. They get 1, 2, or even 3 jobs done, all in one product. For example, you can buy a multi-functional face wash that not only cleanses your face, but has some Salicylic acid in it, helping to keep away acne, keep your pores clean, and help slightly shed the dead skin off your face. Talk about Multi-functional, that’s it!
In every product you buy, this is what you are looking for if you really want to cut back on the number of products you use daily and become a skincare minimalist.
“Extreme Skincare Minimalist AM & PM - Morning Routine”
In this routine, we are going extreme, or also known as “ A man’s skincare routine”.
I’m kidding! Most men don’t even have a routine. I’m kidding again!
In this 2 step routine, as long as you intentionally shop for multi-functional products, you will be doing a great job! The best part about this routine, is you are not only using a gentle acid (in the face wash) helping to exfoliate your skin. But by using Sunscreen Daily (in your moisturizer), you are getting the anti-aging benefits from UV protection.
“Most important Trick to This Routine”
There is one trick to this skincare routine that I need to tell you . If you have been following me or my YouTube channel for any length of time, you know I can not stress enough the importance of misting, spraying or patting your face with water after you have washed it.
This is because we want to keep the skin hydrated, and although the Hyaluronic Acid in your moisturizer is going to do that. You must have a small amount of water on your face for that hyaluronic acid to bind to. If you do not do this step, the hyaluronic acid will pull the moisture from your skin and make you feel dry. Doing the opposite of what we are trying to do.
So your “Sub” step after washing your face, is to pat it with some of your water (not a lot) you don’t want to be dripping. Then put on your moisturizer. We want to keep the skin hydrated and plump!
And that’s it! You now have a very simple, 2 step Skincare Minimalist routine, giving you the well deserved title of “Extreme Skincare Minimalist”!
For all of my minimalists out there, I hope this advice helps for when you go buy your next face wash and moisturizer. Make sure they are “Multi-functional”!
Come back in a few weeks and I’ll share what a “Maximalist Skincare Routine” looks like.

Today let’s talk about 3 major benefits to having “Rooibos” Red Tea in your skincare routine.
Rooibos pronounced “Roy-bows” also known as “African Red Bush” is an herb, harvested while the long needle leaves of the plant are still green, but then undergo an oxidation process turning the leaves Red. Native and exclusively grown in South Africa, this herb is grown from the Aspalathus Linearis plant, containing high levels of antioxidants known as Flavonoids & Polyphenols, as well as Vitamin C, Minerals, Hydroxy Acids, and Zinc.
Highly sought after for it’s powerful antioxidants, this herb is one power house ingredient in skincare. Containing the antioxidant enzyme “SuperOxide Dismutase'', rooibos helps to protect the cells from free radical damage and environmental stress factors, assisting in the prevention of UV damage to the skin.
In a *clinical trial, comparing a handful of herbs used in cosmetic creams for “anti-wrinkle” purposes, the formulation containing Rooibos tea showed the best efficacy “results” on reducing wrinkles in the skin.
3 Benefits To Having “ROOIBOS” Red Tea In Your Skincare Routine
In addition to the amazing skin benefits this tea has topically on the skin, it also has a long list of internal benefits as well. Making this tea a must in every house.
How can you get “Rooibos” red tea into your skincare routine you are probably asking yourself, well I have the answer for you. I have created a luxurious skincare serum called SunLux “Red Tea Serum" that can be used twice a day, and feels silky smooth on the skin. The question I get most often when I talk to women is "How do I build a basic Beginner Skincare Routine?" As a Cosmetic Formulator, I am going to give you what I think is a great basic beginner skincare routine that will really teach you the steps and in what order to do them. There are definitely more steps that can be added later when you get into an Advanced Skincare routine, but for now let’s focus on building a basic beginner routine.
First, especially during the Winter season, let’s understand why our skin becomes dry.
Between fighting the cold weather, rough winds, and dry air, as well as heaters, your skin can really take a beating during the winter. As the seasons change, you certainly need to make a few tweaks in your skincare regimen in order to prevent your skin from drying out and flaking, while still maintaining a good level of moisture and suppleness.
You might be wondering why your skin gets particularly dry in the winter, despite your attempts at moisturizing on a daily basis. Naturally, environmental conditions affect your skin’s health, and during wintertime, humidity levels drop significantly. This means that the air is drier and holds far less moisture than during summertime or warmer weather, which means the elements are pulling moisture out of your skin and dehydrating it. So nourishing and rejuvenating the skin as the weather turns cooler is essential, and this guide to building the perfect basic beginner skincare routine aims to help you do just that.
Here are a few fundamental steps compiled with some of our best tips on protecting your skin from the cold weather and preserving it from drying and dehydration.
You can also watch my YouTube video where I show you a step-by-step routine on my own face.
STEP 1: Cleanse the face
The first step in any proper beauty and skincare routine is cleansing the skin. You want to make sure that your skin is purged of all dirt, nasty oils, and grimes that tend to accumulate during the day. Cleansing should be the base of your skincare routine, however, you should not be using harsh products that strip the skin from its natural oils, no matter how oily your skin is.
Keep in mind that you need to tweak your beauty regimen to fit your seasonal climate. To do so, you can start with an oil-based cleanser (optional) to remove any makeup remnants but still preserve a good amount of moisture. Then you can proceed with a deeper cleanser. If you have very dry skin, avoid using foams or mousses and opt for a product with a creamy and/or milky consistency. On the other hand, if you have excessively oily skin, choose a gentle gel or foam cleanser strong enough to remove the daily oil without stripping your skin's natural oils.
Naturally, the temperature is going to drop during the winter months. It might get unbearably cold but you should not, at any time, wash your face with really hot water. Not only does it strip your skin from all the oils that keep it healthy and balanced, but it will dry your face and cause it to flake. Instead, try cleansing with lukewarm water.
Because it’s winter, you want to stay away from traditional soap ingredients, such as, sodium lauryl sulfate, or products that have a high concentration of AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids) because they tend to dry out the skin and operate deeper into the pores. With that said, if you are acne prone you might want to consider using a face wash with AHA’s or BHA’s because of their ability to remove excess oil. But be sure to hydrate the skin after washing and always wear sunscreen, as the AHA’s and BHA’s can cause your skin to be more sensitive to the sun.
STEP 2: Use a Spray Mist or Toner
So now that your face is clean, you can start adding and locking in moisture. The next step consists of using a hydrating spray or toner. After cleaning your face, you might notice that your skin is looking particularly dull, which is the very opposite of what we’re aiming for. To restore that natural glow and prepare your skin for better absorption of the products to come, you need to use a toner or hydrating spray to add some moisture and balance your skin’s pH levels. Opt for alcohol-free products, as alcohol can dry and irritate the skin.
This step is necessary since some cleansers can move your skin’s pH levels to the acidic side, and you want to bring it back to a neutral level with toning and hydrating. Toners also help remove any extra dirt or makeup residue, especially in the neck area. You’d be surprised how much grime you can still find around the decollete parameters after toning. This step is pretty straightforward, as toners and sprays add an extra layer of hydration to thirsty skin. Since damp skin is far more permeable than dry skin, this step is necessary because using a spray or toner allows serums to sink deep into your skin for optimal absorption.
STEP 3: Apply Serums
Serums consist of highly concentrated active ingredients that are specifically designed to remedy particular skincare concerns, such as, acne, dull skin, prominent pores, dry skin, and wrinkles. You would typically use a serum to hydrate, lighten, get rid of pigmentation and/or treat pimples. They’re generally found in small bottles because they’re very powerful and a few drops go a long way. I personally recommend using three serums with three different properties, but you can work with what you’ve got and one is just fine.
The first one would be a hyaluronic acid serum, and because it binds to water, it will help keep your skin hydrated. Here is the perfect one from SunLux Skincare (my brand). It's called Red Tea Serum + Hyaluronic Acid. It gives you the hydrating benefits, paired with a powerful antioxidant. The second serum should have antioxidant properties, especially since it will help protect your skin from free radicals. I would recommend a serum with Vitamin C. The third serum would be a Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) serum. It works on reducing skin blemishes, and acne scarring, as well as repairing any damage to the skin barrier.
STEP 4: Essential Fatty Acids / Face Oils
The following step involves using facial oils with essential fatty acids (EFA’s), also known as Carrier Oils. These are oils, such as, Argan Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Jojoba Oil and other oils or blends of oils that contain EFA’s. Essential fatty acids are emollients that work on softening the surface layer of the skin to keep your face well-protected, extra smooth, and glowing. These essential fatty acids can really help to repair damage done to the skin by the sun or other environmental pollutants.
Facial oils work on delivering vital fatty acids to your skin, along with sealing in moisture. So if you’re finding that your normal moisturizer isn’t doing the trick, you can look for facial oils with essential fatty acids to replenish and revitalize your dehydrated skin. Remember this step is after you have applied your Serums. Take two to four drops of your oil and gently pat it all over your face. Or you can add one or two drops of your oils to your moisturizer cream, mix it in your hands and then apply.
Let me be clear, I am NOT talking about Essential Oils in this step. Essential Oils are highly concentrated compounds extracted from plants through a distillation process, and can cause severe reactions and become toxic to the skin with direct sun exposure. I never recommend putting essential oils directly on the skin. It can be very dangerous and cause the skin to burn.
STEP 5 & 6: Moisturizer / Eye Cream
This is definitely the most important step in your basic beginner skincare routine, if you want to avoid dry, flaky and dull skin. Moisturizing is essential to ensure the delivery of moisture and hydration into your skin. This step is extremely important because it also locks hydrating and softening agents into your face without allowing them to evaporate off your skin. It also forms a barrier that water cannot penetrate, allowing moisture to be trapped under the skin. The loss of moisture from the skin is called Transepidermal Water Loss; we want to avoid this everyday.
During colder months, you should step up your moisturizers from using light gels to something with a bit thicker consistency. This, again, will seal the moisture into your skin, not allowing it to evaporate into the air.
There is a plethora of moisturizing products available on the market, so be mindful of what ingredients are in these products. Focus on active ingredients that will deliver hydration and nourishment to your skin. Though we all have different complexions and skin types, dryness, dullness, or flakiness are not definitive of a certain skin type, but rather a skin condition that occurs when you don’t moisturize enough.
If you’re worried about your skin looking really shiny or greasy, you should reach for a light moisturizer to use during the daytime. This will not compromise the look you’re going for, but do implement a heavier product into your nighttime skincare routine.
Now let’s take a minute to talk about eye creams. For me, in my skincare routine, I count this as a separate Step. I know not everyone uses eye creams, so I'm including them here under moisturizers. But let’s talk about why I recommend them as a Cosmetic Formulator. This step is equally important as all the others and should not be omitted. The eye area is the thinnest skin on our body and it has no oil glands to keep it moisturized, which is also why we tend to get wrinkles and fine lines, first, under the eyes. This specific area is more prone to dryness during the wintertime, so don’t forget to pick a replenishing eye cream to get you by in the colder months. Much like serums, a little bit goes a long way, so you can apply just about the tiniest amount and that will do the job.
STEP 7: Sunscreen
Now, this should be your most IMPORTANT step of all the steps in your skincare routine. This is coming form someone who has had skin cancer (Basal Cell Carcinoma) removed a number of times from my body. This step is just as important as moisturizing, and I really can’t stress that enough. Whether it’s sunny, snowy or rainy, you should never leave the house without applying sunscreen. One reason why you don’t get sunburned during the winter is because the short waves, (Ultraviolet B), that usually burn the surface layer of your skin, are weaker. However, long waves, Ultraviolet A (or UVA rays), are just as powerful all year-round. This means that you’re still exposed to the damaging effects UVA rays have on your skin; they have an ability to deeply penetrate your skin leading to wrinkles, sunspots, and premature aging. Rain, snow, or shine, always make sure to apply a generous amount of sunscreen before you do your makeup, as dermatologists advise to put on sunscreen at least half an hour before you go outside. And because you can never be too cautious, you can go the extra mile and purchase an SPF lip balm that both moisturizes and protects your lips. The skin on that particular area is substantially thinner and generally much more delicate than other areas on your body, which means it’s also prone to UVA ray's damage.
BONUS: A Lip Balm that might interest you is from my brand SunLux Skincare, which contains the powerful antioxidant Vitamin C. It's excellent for repairing the lips after sun damage and gives great moisturizing benefits.
Take it from me, a Skin Cancer Patient now for life, make sunscreen your favorite product and put it on daily!
With all of these steps, you are now ready to take care of your skin and feel confident in your daily skincare routine.
Here is the list again of all the steps. You can take a screen shot or write it down so you don’t forget.

Tracking potential Skin Cancer moles on your body can be as easy as keeping a diary. Remember when you were little and you would write down your thoughts or things you did on summer vacations with your family? Then months later you would read through your diary and remember those times like they were yesterday. Keeping track of your body's moles or sunspots can be just as easy.
In this article I am going to teach you how to keep track of your ever-changing skin moles and sunspots, as well as give you our FREE “Skin Diary” downloadable form. This takes all the work out of wondering what notes to take. You simply download the form, take it with you to your annual Dermatologist appointment, and then file it away until the next time you need to review your notes or see your doctor.
Keeping a “Skin Diary” can be very easy. You can do this yourself, or do this in the company of a Dermatologist. Here are the action steps you want to take to start your diary.
STEP 1: Download your “Skin Diary” form for FREE *here:
STEP 2: Thoroughly look over your body, front and back, and mark down all of the moles or sunspots on your Skin Diary form.
STEP 3: Make any notes of moles that bleed, itch, or that you feel need immediate attention.
STEP 4: You can take this step one level higher and measure your moles or sunspots. Then write them down on your form so the tracking can begin. In a few months or even years later, you can re-measure those exact same moles and sunspots to track any growth that may be occurring over time.
STEP 5: Make your yearly Dermatologist appointment and bring your filled-in “Skin Diary” forms, along with a new blank sheet, to your appointment. At this time you and your doctor can fill it out together, and make any notes for your future visits. When you get home, file these forms away for future reference.
And there you have it, you have started to build your “Skin Diary”.
If you are like me, you might even take it to Staples and have it bound in book form to give it a true diary feel.
I would love to hear from you in the comments below if you decide to try my “Skin Diary” form and let me know how it is working for you.
