Sun Tips From A Lifeguard
Ever wonder how lifeguards do it? Besides saving lives…how do they sit under the sun all day? Day in, day out soaking up the sun… we’ve got some sun tips from a lifeguard to help you sit outside comfortably and safely.
3 “W’s” - Water, Watermelon, Wide Brim Hat
Your water and watermelon will keep you hydrated throughout the day. And your wide brim hat will protect your head, face, and possibly neck and shoulders from the sun’s rays. Keep the 3 W’s top of mind when heading for the beach.
Sunscreen
Be on the lookout for a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. From there, find a waterproof sunscreen. Most sports sunscreens provide long wear. And once you’ve applied your sunscreen, then reapply, reapply, reapply.
Zinc Oxide
Zinc is your best friend. Cover your nose, cheeks, and under your eyes with your zinc (they now make zinc in fun colors that kids love). A mineral sunscreen like zinc physically blocks the sun’s rays by sitting on top of your skin, reflecting the radiation.
UPF 50 Swimsuits or Coverings
UPF 50 clothing, including swimsuits, protect your skin from all but 2.5% of the sun’s UV rays. They are easy to find on Amazon where you can read reviews before making your decision.
Sunglasses with UV Protection
Protect both your eyes and the delicate skin around your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses. Without this protection, we put our eyes at risk of developing eye diseases, including eye cancer. Look for labels that say “UV absorption up to 400 nm” or “Meets ANSI UV Requirements”. These labels mean your sunglasses are blocking at least 99% of UV rays.
Rotate Your Time
Rotate your time in the water and your time in the shade. While the water will keep you cool, your skin is still exposed to the sun. Not only will the sun’s rays increase your risk of skin damage, but the sun’s heat will take a toll on your body, potentially dehydrating you.
Water Flask
Remember your water flask if you plan on staying in the sun all day. An insulated water flask will keep your cold. Drinking water will help you stay hydrated and will help keep you from developing headaches, overheating, and fainting.
Evening Ritual
After spending a full day in the sun, a cool temperature shower can help your body recover from the high temperatures. Apply soft water pressure to your skin and then remember to moisturize the skin before bed.
Drink Water Before Bed
This is a must! Fortify your body against dehydration by drinking water before bed. Proper hydration can help your body with sleep stages, as well as help you sleep more efficiently. It can also help your body regulate its temperature.
